DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIPS available to Alpha Grads:

The following District bursaries/scholarships are available for Burnaby Secondary School Graduates and are valued from $250-$1000.  You may apply for more than one of the following scholarships as long as you meet the stated criteria. Please READ the specific criteria for each scholarship or bursary before you apply.

□  Burnaby Civic Employee’s – CUPE Local 23 Scholarship ($500)

CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT- CUPE LOCAL 23 SCHOLARSHIP

APPLICATION – CUPE LOCAL 23

  • Must be attending a BC post-secondary or vocational school
  • Maintained a good academic standing
  • Demonstrated good citizenship in school and the community
  • Participated in volunteer activities
  • Consideration will be given to a student with financial need

□  Burnaby Association of Senior Exempt Staff (BASES) Scholarship ($1000)

CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT – BASES SCHOLARSHIP

APPLICATION – BASES SCHOLARSHIP

  • Maintained a good academic standing
  • Been actively involved in community service and/or volunteer work beyond that required for graduation
  • Demonstrated leadership in Burnaby through consistent and outstanding dedication to a community initiative or making their community a better place.
  • Must be going on to a BC post-secondary or vocational training program.

□  Burnaby Arts Council Scholarship ($200)

CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT – BURNABY ARTS COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP

APPLICATION – BURNABY ARTS COUNCIL (1)

  • Demonstrated excellence and achievement in the arts (performing, visual or literary)
  • Exhibited a good academic record with letters of commendation
  • Plans to pursue post-secondary studies in the arts leading to a professional status in theatre, dance, visual arts, creative writing or music.
  • Consideration will be given to students with financial need.

□  Ted Elphick Memorial Bursary (TBA)

CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT – TED ELPHICK

APPLICATION – TED ELPHICK

  • Candidate selected is a Burnaby resident who has, through positive will and spirit, overcome physical or mental challenges to graduate from a Burnaby secondary school.
  • Enrolled in a Burnaby school for five years.
  • Demonstrated ability and desire to be a life long learner and continue his or her education at a post-secondary institution or in a recognized training program

□  Lex Henderson Memorial Bursary ($750)

CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT – LEX HENDERSON MEMORIAL

APPLICATION – LEX HENDERSON

  • Passionate about sports and committed to the spirit of “teamwork”
  • Involved in school and/or community sports as a player, manager or other contributing role (e.g. referee)
  • Demonstrated having a positive influence in school and/or community through dedication & hard work
  • Exemplified strong character demonstrating personal responsibility and respect for others
  • Demonstrated plans to continue with education in a post secondary program
  • Priority given to students who have financial need

□  Dawn Harris Memorial Scholarship ($500)

CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT – DAWN HARRIS

APPLICATION – DAWN HARRIS MEMORIAL

  • Been enrolled in Burnaby school for two senior years
  • Maintained a good academic standing
  • Been involved in the school’s athletic program
  • Demonstrated outstanding citizenship and strong leadership skills in the school
  • Demonstrates plans to continue with education in a post-secondary program

□  Richard T. Lee, MLA, Scholarship ($500)

  • Maintained a good academic standing
  • Demonstrated good citizenship in school and in the community

  • Demonstrates good citizenship and leadership skills
  • Actively involved in community service/volunteer work
  • Provide evidence of volunteer or work experience, including letters of reference attesting to student’s work ethic
  • Participated and actively involved in school and community and/or volunteer activities
  • Demonstrated good citizenship and leadership skills

□  Dr. & Mrs. A. H. Pontifex ($500)

CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT – PONTIFEX SCHOLARSHIP

APPLICATION – PONTIFEX SCHOLARSHIP

  • Has maintained good academic standing
  • Has taken a concentration of and excelled in, courses in the field of Science
  • Has demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership in school and community
  • Has participated in community service and volunteer work in the community
  • Has demonstrated a passion for, and interest in, pursuing a career in Science

□  RICOH Office Solutions Scholarship ($250)

  • Must be attending BCIT in the next 2 years (proof of registration required)
  • Demonstrated good citizenship
  • Actively involved in school service
  • Maintained a good academic standing
  • Consideration given to a student with financial need

□  Rotary Club of Burnaby Bursary ($1000)

CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT – ROTARY CLUB OF BURNABY BURSARY AWARD

APPLICATION – ROTARY CLUB OF BURNABY BURSARY AWARD

  • Has maintained a good academic standing
  • Has demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership in school and the community

  • Demonstrates financial need

□  Marjorie Jane Stephenson – Education Scholarship ($450)

CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT – MARJORIE JANE STEPHENSON

APPLICATION – MARJORIE JANE STEPHENSON

  • Demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in Health Care
  • Demonstrated community service assisting older adults
  • One of your reference letters will need to be from the supervisor of the care facility where you volunteered
  • Enrolled in a Burnaby school for 2 senior years
  • Maintained a good academic standing
  • Demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership skills in the school and community

□  Marlene Larson Scholarship ($500)  ***Note:  Please, directly apply to the District Office for this award

CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT – MARLENE LARSON

APPLICATION – MARLENE LARSON

  • Awarded to a Burnaby graduate who is blind, visually impaired or deaf-blind
  • Be planning on enrolling in a post secondary program
  • Demonstrate ability to set goals
  • Be motivated, show responsibility and be oriented towards independence

□  Louella Downing Visual Arts Scholarship ($1000)  ***Note:  Please, directly apply to the Burnaby Teachers’ Association Office (BTA) for this award

CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT – LOUELLA DOWNING

APPLICATION – LOUELLA DOWNING

  • Maintain a good academic standing
  • Demonstrated excellence in a minimum of two senior Visual Arts courses
  • Demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in Visual Arts
  • Submit 8-10 photographs of original art work illustrating a range of subjects and media. Each photo must be labelled with the size and media of the art work shown.  (Do not send originals).

CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT – WAR MEMORIAL

APPLICATION – WAR MEMORIAL

  • Is a Canadian citizen and is graduating from a Burnaby school
  • Has the desire to continue his/her education at a post secondary institution in Canada and has been accepted to attend a post secondary institution
  • Continually demonstrates the values associated with good citizenship – caring, sharing and responsibility and a willingness to help others
